Because I do not accept attached files and because emails so often create problems with the formatting in your papers, you are going to submit your papers through an online site called Turn It In. The following instructions will help you get started with Turn It In and will walk you through the steps for submitting your paper.

You must register with Turn It In and create a user profile.
(Turn It In does not charge students so this won't cost you anything.)

I strongly suggest you do this in advance rather than waiting until the last minute. You shouldn't have any problems registering and creating a user profile. However, if you wait until the last minute and DO have problems, that will not be an excuse for missing the deadline for your paper.

To complete the following steps you will need the class ID, the enrollment password and the class name found in the Final Paper instructions in your syllabus.

ENROLLING IN YOUR COURSE

Step 1

If you already have an account, simply  log in, go to your student user home page and enroll in your course using the class ID & enrollment password in your syllabus. A single user profile can be used to enroll in multiple classes. If you do not already have an account you must register and create a user profile. To do that, go to www.turnitin.com and click on New Users at the top of the homepage.

Click to register and create your user profile.

The new user wizard will open and walk you through the profile creation process. To create a profile, you must have a class ID and an enrollment password. This information is in your syllabus in the Final Paper instructions.

IMPORTANT NOTE

ONE PROFILE CAN BE ENROLLED IN MULTIPLE CLASSES,
BUT TURN IT IN WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO SUBMIT MULTIPLE PAPERS FOR THE SAME ASSIGNMENT.

IF YOU ARE TAKING TWO COURSES WITH ME IN THE SAME SEMESTER, YOU WILL NEED TO CREATE TWO USER PROFILES.

TURN IT IN WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CREATE A SECOND PROFILE USING AN EMAIL ADDRESS ALREADY IN ITS DATABANK.

IF YOU & A FRIEND ARE SHARING THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, ONE OF YOU WILL NEED A DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESS TO CREATE HIS/HER PROFILE.

YOU MUST HAVE A DIFFERENT (LEGITIMATE) EMAIL ADDRESS FOR EACH USER PROFILE.
(ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET A FREE HOTMAIL ADDRESS TO USE WITH THE 2ND USER PROFILE.)

Step 2

To open your portfolio, click on the name of your class on your homepage. The class name is on the Assignments page of your syllabus in the Final Paper instructions.

Click on the name of your class to open your portfolio.

SUBMITTING YOUR PAPER

Step 1

Your class portfolio shows your assignments and your submissions to the class. Click submit next to the Final Paper assignment.

Click submit to upload your paper.

Step 2

The submission page will open. Enter first name, last name and the title of your paper where instructed. (See picture below.) As per syllabus instructions, do NOT also put your name and title in the body of your paper.

To select the paper you are submitting, click browse and locate the paper on your computer. Turn It In accepts submissions in MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF, PDF, PostScript, HTML and plain text (.txt).

After entering the title of your paper and selecting a file, click submit to upload your paper.

Locate your paper, enter a title and click submit.

If your paper is in a format Turn It In does not accept, you can submit it by cut-and-paste. To submit a paper this way, select cut & paste from the pull down menu at the top of the form.

Select cut & paste from the pull down menu.

To submit a paper by cut-and-paste, copy the text of your paper from your word processing program and then paste it into the text box in the submission form. (CTRL-A selects the contents of your paper file. CTRL-C copies the selection. CTRL-V pastes the selection to a new location.) If you submit your paper with cut-and-paste, you can skip step 5. (I strongly suggest you upload your paper rather than using cut-and-paste.)

Step 3

The next page shows what you submitted. Look over everything and make sure it's correct. To confirm the submission, click yes, submit. (What you see as your submission may not show all of the formatting. For example, it may show your paper as single-spaced even though you used double-spacing. However, I have access to your original submission in addition to the the version you see so I'll know what formatting you used.)

Make sure you selected the correct paper & click yes, submit to finalize your submission.

Step 4

After you confirm your submission, you will see a digital receipt. Turn It In will email this receipt to you. To return to your portfolio and view your submission, click portfolio.

Click portfolio to return to your portfolio and view your submission.

If you need further assistance with Turn It In, see the student user manual.

ORIGINALITY REPORTS

Originality Reports provide a summary of the matching text found in a submitted paper. When an Originality Report is available to view, an icon will appear in the report column of your assignment inbox. Originality reports that are not yet finished are represented by a grayed-out icon.

The color of the report icon indicates the overall similarity index of the paper, based on the amount of matching text. The possible similarity indices are:

      blue (no matching words)

      green (1 word-24% matching text)

      yellow (25-49% matching text)

      orange (50-74% matching text)

      red (75-100% matching text)

These indices in no way reflect an assessment of whether a paper has or has not been plagiarized. Originality Reports are simply tools to help me locate potential sources of plagiarism in submitted papers. The decision to deem any work plagiarized must be made carefully and only after careful examination of both the submitted paper and the suspect sources.

To open an Originality Report, click the report icon in the contents column of your portfolio. The Originality Report will open in a new window.

Report shows up in your class portfolio.

The Originality Report has three main sections:

paper information - The report header shows information about the submitted paper including paper title, author, word count and the date the report was processed.

paper text - The left side of the report shows the text of the submitted paper. Matching text is highlighted in red and numbered to correspond with sources to the right.

matching sources - The right side of the report lists the sources of matching text.

For more details on Originality Reports see the student user manual.
