SITE MAP If you run across an URL that has been discontinued or changed or just plain doesn't work, please email me. The web changes daily and I want to be able to keep you as up-to-date as possible. If you will let me know when you have problems, I will track down the source and make any necessary changes. Assignment Rules Assignments 1-8 are papers. Each paper must be a minimum of one full page, single-spaced. Any papers less than the minimum length will lose points. Papers should be in 12 point regular font (not bold) only. Don't go for brevity! There may be a very short answer to the topic but you are expected to fill in with background information ... show your knowledge! The assignment number and your name must appear at the beginning of the assignment. I will not guess who you are or which assignment you are completing. Do not put anything else in your heading - not the course, no date, no title, nothing else. Headings are not intended to be used to "pad" out your length. Do not include graphics, pictures, etc. with or in an assignment (including any "automatic" signature graphics, pictures, etc. that are added to your emails by your software) unless the assignment specifically asks for or allows such inclusions. Even when requested or allowed, the narrative part of your paper must meet the minimum required length. Do not worry too much about formatting ... it's hard to maintain in cyberspace. On paragraphs, for example, don't try to indent at the beginning of each. Just put a blank line between each paragraph. (Do not "pad" out your length with lots of blank lines, though!) Assignments cannot be sent as attached files, in forwarded emails, or in a reply email. You must paste your assignment into the body of a new email. Please make sure that you use the correct subject line on your email. The correct subject line is given on the main page of your syllabus. You may send your assignments early as long as you send them one at a time and in order. Once I have sent your grade on an assignment, you may send the next one. Always give your answers in essay form. Do not list your answers to relate to specific questions that may be asked unless the assignment specifically asks for that. The rubric by which I evaluate assignments is given on the Grading Rubrics page, which is linked to the main Political Science page. I strongly suggest you review the rubric before completing any assignments.
Assignments Write an essay about political ideology. What is a political ideology? In what ways is an ideology similar to, and in what ways different from, a scientific theory or a religion? Ball & Dagger maintain that nationalism and anarchism are not political ideologies. Do agree with them? Explain why you agree or disagree. Read the Plato Parallel by Laurie Bagby which can be found at www-personal.ksu.edu/~lauriej/links/parallels/plato.html. Do you agree with the parallels that Bagby draws? Give at least one parallel of your own and explain it. Go to the Leviathan (Hobbes) background page at www.humanities.mq.edu.au/Ockham/y6709.html. Write a paper on the historical background in which Hobbes was forming his theories. Include an explanation on how that background might have affected his theories. Go to the Traditionalist Conservatism page at http://counterrevolution.net/trad.html. How do the authors define traditionalist conservatism? How does it compare/contrast with the various schools of conservatism you studied this week? Go to the online version of Mein Kampf, by Adolf Hitler, which can be found at www.hitler.org/writings/Mein_Kampf/. Under Volume 1, click on Chapter XI 'NATION AND RACE.' Hitler begins by saying, "There are some truths which are so obvious that for this very reason they are not seen or at least not recognized by ordinary people." To what is Hitler referring and can you give contemporary examples? Choose any one of the following for your paper topic:
